Hi everyone, my name is My Nguyen, though most people know me as America.
My journey into tattooing began in 2012 when I was still in 11th grade. At that time, many people saw me as just a rebellious teenager. What they didn’t see was a young artist driven by passion, curiosity, and a deep love for creating with his hands.
I was born into a humble family in rural Vietnam. My father worked as an offshore fisherman and spent most of his time at sea, while my mother took on many different jobs to support our family. We lived a simple life. I grew up during a time when our village didn’t even have electricity, and we relied on oil lamps for light.
My first introduction to art came from the ancestral temples in my village. I would spend hours watching local craftsmen paint landscapes and create intricate relief sculptures. Those experiences sparked something inside me. From that moment on, I drew every day and became fascinated with creating art.
By the time I was in seventh grade, I began learning sculpture from my uncle. I created Buddhist statues such as Maitreya, Shakyamuni Buddha, and Avalokiteshvara. Within a year, I was already earning money from my work. At the same time, I painted murals on weekends and continued developing my artistic skills.
I discovered tattooing when I accompanied a friend to a tattoo appointment during high school. Instantly, I became fascinated by the craft. Using simple materials available at home, I built my first tattoo machine and started practicing on myself. Later, I tattooed friends and people around me. At that time, tattoo artists were extremely rare where I lived, and I was fortunate to have many people trust me from the beginning.
My tattoo career truly started when my uncle asked me a simple question:
“Why don’t you make tattooing your profession?”
That question changed my life.
Without formal training, mentors, or access to professional courses, I taught myself through online forums, YouTube videos, and countless hours of practice. I studied the work of artists around the world, analyzed every detail, and continuously challenged myself to improve.
The early years were not easy. Tattooing was heavily stigmatized where I lived, and many people associated it with negative stereotypes. But I never let those opinions stop me. I believed that tattooing was not only a profession but also a powerful form of art—a way for people to express themselves, preserve memories, and tell their stories through their skin.
As my skills improved, more clients began trusting me with their ideas. What started as simple tattoos gradually evolved into larger, more complex projects. Along the way, I learned that great tattooing requires more than technical ability. It requires empathy, communication, and understanding the meaning behind each piece.
Today, after more than a decade in the industry, I remain as passionate as ever. Every tattoo I create is approached with care, respect, and attention to detail. My goal is not only to create beautiful artwork but also to provide an experience where clients feel understood, comfortable, and confident throughout the process.
When you sit in my chair, you’re not just getting a tattoo. You’re sharing a story, a memory, or a meaningful moment in your life. It is an honor to be entrusted with that responsibility.
Thank you to every client who has supported me throughout this journey. Your trust inspires me to continue growing as an artist and to keep pushing myself to create the best work possible.
